Position Summary
Under general supervision an intermediate level position with responsibility for repairing, renovating, installing, modifying and maintaining buildings, structures and other DCCCD facilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to interpret blueprints; to organize preventive maintenance programs. Knowledge of building codes. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Strong knowledge and experience providing effective customer service.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, push, lift, dig, haul, pull, reach, carry, grasp, squat or stoop, bend and twist the body while performing essential duties, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk or hear. The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye.


Minimum Knowledge and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent plus three years of experience as a carpenter. Skill in the use of tools and equipment, such as saws, drill press, drills, routers, sanders, etc. Valid driver’s license required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Paints and stains woodwork and furniture; maintains brick/masonry walls; removes and replaces walls, door panels, blackboards, carpeting, builds cabinets and shelving and maintains bulletin boards. Repairs and adjusts doors, including automatic doors; repairs and replaces locks. Receives work orders; ascertain service needed, prepares cost estimates of material and labor used in planning; distributes work accordingly to other lower level tradesmen. Complies with all applicable health and safety regulations, policies and established work policies. Prepares cost estimates of material and labor used in planning. Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment. Assists other staff members with projects in maintenance, repair and installation duties, in related trades. Performs and oversees preventive maintenance of designated building(s) and structural components. Interprets blue prints, schematics, and technical manuals in performing repairs and installation activities. Requisitions supplies, parts, equipment and other related items. Makes recommendations for future budget and equipment needs. Functions in a lead capacity and performs supervisory duties in absence of the supervisor. Some positions may be required to actively participate in the production of signage throughout the location. Performs related duties as assigned.
