Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge in conducting individual needs assessments. Knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA) and regulations as they relate to military changes that affect military service members. Advanced knowledge of computer technology and software applications in order to process registrations and to utilize specific software related to student advisement. Ability to deal extensively and effectively with a wide variety of individuals requiring excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills in order to convince, influence and direct students to their academic goals. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to utilize computer technology to input/access data, maintain records, review and generate reports. Must be detailed oriented. The ability to provide quality customer service.

Physical Requirements
Works with light material requiring little physical effort.

Minimum Knowledge and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or higher plus three years’ experience working in veterans affairs, post-secondary institution or other government regulated programs or Associate’s degree plus five years’ experience working in veterans affairs, post-secondary institution or other government regulated programs or High School graduate or equivalent plus seven years’ experience working in veterans affairs, post-secondary institution or other government regulated programs.

Preferred knowledge and skills. 

• Bachelor’s degree, preferred.

• Three or more years of work experience providing guidance in an academic setting and processing veteran or military educational benefits.

• Excellent communication skills in order to identify and resolve complex issues with a varied audience.

• Strong networking skills so to represent the institution at off campus events. Must possess a valid driver’s license and transfer related educational materials weighing up to 20 lbs.  Some travel required.

•  Flexibility to work beyond the regular workday if needed.  CEVSS is open Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and some Saturdays during peak enrollment times.  Some travel required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides the overall coordination of Veterans Affairs (VA). Responsible for the day-to-day operations of addressing the needs of all veteran affairs students. Perform and work closely with the Business Affairs Office to code veteran students with anticipated aid and disbursement regarding tuition and fees. Additionally, perform work as a compliance officer to evaluate critical issues affecting the organization by reconciling veteran administration study system data to DCCCD’s student financial account. Serves as the custodian of records for veteran educational benefits (i.e., veterans, spouses, and dependents). Communicates and collaborates with student services staff, faculty and administrators to promote and implement VA student retention and success efforts. Responsible for identifying VA Chapter(s) Hazelwood educational benefits for veterans, spouses, and dependents. Prepares annual catalog approval application packet for the Texas Veterans Commission/Veteran Affairs.
Provides academic advisement and planning to prospective and current veteran students utilizing a variety of resources provided by DCCCD, community organizations, and other colleges, universities and related organizations. Assures compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). Responsible for facilitation of veteran student orientation, workshops and seminars. May conduct internal and external recruitment efforts. Participates in DCCCD’s veteran’s council and helps to facilitate meetings. Provides and submits reports of VA statistical data which includes, but not limited to, special project activities, student contacts, retention, degree completion and other data as requested. Review and continually update the VA website and other resources. Works collaboratively with the marketing department to public advertisement. Certifies veterans in compliance with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) for students pursuing certificate(s) and/or degrees. May supervise staff and VA work-study students. Acts as compliance officer to evaluate critical issues affecting the school’s eligibility to serve veteran/dependent students. Reconcile the Department of Veteran Affairs Student System (VAONCE portal) to DCCCD’s student financial accounts (Colleague). Prepares various reports and documentation needed to verify attendance, grades and progress to DVA. Promote and support campus Student Veteran Organization (SVO). Makes appropriate referrals to campus and community resources/agencies. Reconciles all student accounts for veteran tuition regarding Chapter 33 – Post 911 and discrepancies. Serves as compliance officer. Performs other related job duties as assigned.
